Inspired by a pencil, the design concept of this ballpoint pen is to combine the feel of a pencil with the ease of use that is a feature of a ballpoint pen.
POSTALCO designer Mike Abelson thought it would be nice to have a pen that was somewhere between a pencil and a ballpoint pen. Inspired by the age-old process of pencil making - clamping the lead between wooden slats and sharpening it - he designed a capped ballpoint pen that uses metal and resin to express the layered structure of a pencil.
In order to achieve both design and performance as a writing instrument, Mitsubishi Pencil has focused on making the pen comfortable to use, using its precise metal processing technology.
The shaft, with its innovative design, is carved out of a single metal bar.
The metal parts of the shaft are coated with a highly hard coating, and the plastic parts of the shaft are finished with colored resin, so the color will not come off even if the surface is scratched.
In addition, the surface of the resin parts has fine irregularities so that they fit comfortably on your fingers.
While the product is strong enough to last for many years, it also has a warm texture that is characteristic of Postalco, in response to designer Mike Abelson's desire that "people should enjoy the changes (aging) that occur with use, such as scratches."
The shape of the presentation box is also carefully designed to resemble a pencil. The hexagonal pasted boxes, which are the same shape as the pencil body, are made individually by hand using carefully selected materials.
The logo printed on the paper wrapping the boxes is also hand-printed by artisans using letterpress, giving each item a warm finish that can only be achieved through hand-made work.
